How I open DAW files from Finale
I open so many Finale files a day when orchestrating and arranging and each one has a corresponding DAW file, usually Digital Performer. In this video I show off the Keyboard Maestro Macro I made to open the correct file with one keystroke.
I also mention the jog shuttle, check out this video for how it works ruclips.net/video/SHDJlxZ2bpA/видео.htmlsi=5dBxqLwF998bopR-

DAW control

When I am orchestrating, I am constantly checking the composers audio and midi which means I am using a DAW along side Finale. I was getting sick of manually switching programs every time I needed to playback from DP, so I came up with this way to control it in the background using a combination of a Contour Shuttle Xpress and Keyboard Maestro. contourdesign.com/products/shuttle-xpress www.timu...

I wrote this piece to demonstrate various orchestration and notation techniques. Find an in-depth discussion of the details here at my blog, deBreved: www.timusic.net/debreved/error-code-7-a-deep-dive-part-1/ The recording was part of a session organized by my friends at Hollywood Scoring. Recorded and Mixed by Adam Michalak. www.debreved.com/ www.hollywoodscoring.com/

deBreved Interview: Endre Granat Part 1
Great video. I wish DP was popular again.
A more generic way to do it without having to open Finale to get the path is to put it in the Comment file attribute. Get Info -> Comment. With a bit of AppleScript you can get the comment attribute and open the file that way with KM.
Interesting, never looked in there until now! That said, our first step is opening the finale file, so it is open. I guess we could have the macro look at the comment every time a finale file opens and then open the DP that way. But we don't always need to open DP. Anyway, thanks for the tip.
Cool tips as always. I think you can do just the project opening part of things by using DP’s project clippings. I’m pretty sure they can open external files upon project open.
How would that work?
@@debreved (theoretically) Open DP project, open project clippings window, drag Finale file into it. From now on, anytime you open the DP project, it should auto-open Finale and the Finale file. (Obviously it wouldn't give you your extended automations like auto-locating.)
More KM videos!
Yeah, I should. Honestly, I just don't even know where to start! I don't want to be too simple, but also don't want to go above everyones head with something really complicated that only works on my machine and setup.
I loved so much that he inserted parts of the themes of the great 5 in the song! ❤ The scene when everyone gets reunited with their families breaks me so bad… I can’t see this without tearing up.
Absolutely gorgeous
insane textures!! thank you so much for providing the score!
Stremelo!?!?! is that your invention? Its a delightful, sublime texture
Nice! ;)
Brilliant. Precise and evocative orchestration that shows how the economy of language in a score can deliver so much musicality and clarity.
There's some ridiculously cool textures and harmony in this. Well done Tim!
That’s great, thanks for doing this. Can’t wait for the blog articles!
Thank you!
Beautiful stuff, thanks for posting! I may just have to comment on this on my channel. Note that in the gap in m75, I can hear people talking (it's in my sub -- probably conversation in the control room). FYI. And just because I have to mention it, Adam Michalak and I went to high school together in NJ -- we were in marching band together! Small world.
love it!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing this!
BRAVO and THANKS !
My favorite composer in Tim Davies (I love Dialmentia, Sarahbande, Counting to Infinity, Epic), and my favorite rapper in Nas - my life is complete.
I am looking for a solo transcription of the tenor solo in k and l does anyone know where to find that?
I really appreciated hearing what he had to say. My graduate professor was Calvin Smith who was a colleague of James Thatcher many years ago back in the day. I developed focal dystonia during my graduate years and had to abandon those dreams but I enjoy listening to others who realized their dreams. I do still play but I have to take it easy, something of which Hollywood studio players can't do.
Hi Tim, amazing video man. Your workflow is beautiful. I'm going to poke around your page and look for myself but wondering if your Finale templates are available for download somewhere? I would love to make use of them if you're willing to share. Peace!
So enlightening video, can’t find this in books. I wish you did that for all instruments.
In no bloody orchestration book they’ll tell you that the players will change the way they play depending in the hall/studio/number of players. Thank you so much for the practical knowledge
Maya the goddess of sun
This song is very beautiful and emotional. I’m really sad that the show ended. Like Maya always said “if it is to be, it’s up to me”🥹🎶🦅☀️
Very nice getting to know you, Andre. I am your wife's cousin.
Very cool soundtrack and the channel! "The Greatest Wizard" and "Maya and the Three" too! I liked all tracks! Thank you so much!! P.S. Serge, orchestrator from Russia.
Nice work - love the modulations and mixing of elec. guitar / drums

GORGEOUS SIR!!! - GREAT VIDEO
What a fantastic piece of music Tim! Your performers did an outstanding job, too. Thanks for sharing this.
This is so beautiful and magical, Tim. Complete goosebumps from it, now I have to watch this series! Thanks for making this video happen (of course big credit goes to the editor Drew) and sharing it!
Ah great, the tears again :")
Great work Tim!
Great video, thanks a lot!!
This guy is my favorite horn player!!
very nicely exposed and super didactic. Thank you very much
This song is amazing!
Arrived here from your blog! Thank you for uploading this Tim.
So nice to see you again Jim!
Thank you! I'm trying to write something like this, but have little music knowledge. I have this 12-bar bassline which ascends major scale, descends minor. I shift it to I, IV, V positions. I can solo the blues scale over it no problem with my guitar, but trying to come up with a decent 4-part harmony for accompanying big band winds seems to be beyond me. So far I've tried harmonising down for B7, E7, F#7, but it doesn't sound good to me. I don't really know where to go next. I'm going to try substituting more chords in and harmonising over them, also maybe come up with a busier melody in triplets over my bassline with less repeating notes. I wonder whether I need a walking bassline instead though...I'm totally lost so if anyone can point me to basic rules for bog standard blues for big band sections I'd be greateful!
Thanks for sharing, super useful!!
